# ABSTRACT:
# The report authors maintained notes detailing the process that
# was used to do the analysis for this report. The pertinent
# notes were included in the appendix of the report.
# Some details that did not warrant publication reside
# in these notes. These notes are being archived in the
# event that they might be of use to future water-use
# efforts aimed at stream-valley aquifers.

New Mexico
Explanation of Stream-valley aquifer

Water-use estimates for New Mexico in 2000 were compiled using site-specific and spatial data provided by the New Mexico Office of the State Engineer (OSE). Some 2000 data are found online at http://www.ose.state.nm.us/publications_technical_reports_wateruse.html and, according to Robert Gold and Roger Durall, (verbal commun. Aug, 2006) were part of the dataset that was used to compile the county data for USGS 2000 5-year compilation.
Data for public supply were provided by the State office with primacy over drinking water, as well as municipal league directories, but not all facilities were required to report annual withdrawals. Data were lacking for areas not declared as a groundwater basin of concern or for facilities with pre-basin water rights. Survey questionnaires are sent to facilities to gather withdrawal data for public-supply and self-supplied industrial uses. Irrigation water-use estimates were derived by the OSE using data for irrigated cropping areas, including tabulated gross irrigated acreage for each individual crop, cropping patterns, source of water and information about irrigation systems that are used on the crops.
In 2000, total ground-water withdrawals in New Mexico were 1,540 Mgal/d, and over 97 percent (1,500 Mgal/d) of that was for public-supply, self-supplied industrial and irrigation uses and assigned to a principal aquifer. The vast majority of ground-water use was for irrigation (1,230 Mgal/d), and most of that was supplied from the High Plains aquifer system (498 Mgal/d), the Basin and Range basin-fill aquifers (164 Mgal/d) and Rio Grande aquifer system (136 Mgal/d). New Mexico did not report withdrawals for Alluvial aquifers because these aquifers or aquifer systems are all other principal aquifers and composed of unconsolidated sand and gravel deposits of Quaternary age, thereby making them difficult to distinguish from a stream-valley alluvial aquifer. New Mexico did report withdrawals from Other aquifers (83.9 Mgal/d), however there was no conclusive evidence that substantiated these withdrawals were from a stream-valley aquifer. These withdrawals represent about 6 percent of total aquifer withdrawals.
Documentation from New Mexicos 5-year compilation provided a table that listed all counties and the principal aquifers, including one column for Not a Principal Aquifer, which in previous years was used and latter titled Other aquifers. The table is in the report.
